The first day of school is such a special milestone. Whether you’re sending your little one off to preschool, VPK, kindergarten, or another school that requires uniforms, getting everything together can feel overwhelming.
After searching for pieces that are comfortable, durable, and actually hold up through recess, playgrounds, and countless washes, I’ve rounded up our favorite toddler girl school uniform essentials. These are the items I’d purchase again without hesitation.

Uniform Bottoms
A good rule of thumb is to have enough uniforms for the school week with a couple of extras for unexpected spills or muddy playground adventures.
Active Attire
Whether it’s PE class, field day, or after-school activities, having a few comfortable athletic outfits on hand is always a good idea. I look for breathable fabrics, stretchy waistbands, and pieces that can keep up with all the running, climbing, and playing toddlers do. Bonus points if they’re easy to mix and match and hold up well after plenty of washes!
My Favorites:
- Skort Option
- Gym Shorts (that are school appropriate!!!)
Uniform Shorts
Soft, stretchy shorts are our everyday favorite during warmer months. Look for adjustable waistbands that grow with your child.

Uniform Skorts & Skirts
Skorts are the best of both worlds—they look polished while allowing kids to climb, swing, and play without worry. An extra perk for us in VPK was bottoms that did not have buttons. Last minute trips to the bathroom and a toddler on their own with buttons can be a disaster.
Favorites that we will continue to buy in size ups:
Uniform Pants
For cooler weather, I always recommend pants with reinforced knees and adjustable waists. They’ll last much longer throughout the school year. But again, finding a pair with an elastic waist will be my top pick every time! Style 1 below was our favorite this year! It gives the look of dressier khakis but is more stretchy and knit material, perfect for little ones!!
Our Go-To Pants:
- Style 1
- Style 2 – same material as style 1, just skinny jeans rather than flares!
- Style 3 – dressier option we purchased for VPK graduation
Shoes That Hold Up
School shoes get worn hard! Comfort is just as important as durability, especially for busy little feet.
When shopping, I look for:
- Easy Velcro closures
- Cushioned insoles
- Non-slip soles
- Neutral colors approved by most schools
Favorite School Shoes:
- Option 1 – my 4 year old wore these daily for 6 months of VPK, if that doesn’t say durable, I’m not sure what does!
- Option 2 – a better option for days where they need more of a tennis shoe style.
Socks We Love
Good socks seem like such a small thing until they’re constantly sliding down into little shoes.
I prefer:
- Cushioned bottoms
- Moisture-wicking fabric
- Seamless toes
- White ankle socks that stay put
- Adding a cutesy touch is always a perk, too!
Our Favorites:
Hair Accessories
One of my favorite ways to add personality to a school uniform is through bows and simple hair accessories.
Our everyday favorites include:
- Neutral school bows
- Headbands with bows
- Matching ponytail holders
- No-slip clips
- A few fun bows for pops of personality
Shop Our Favorites:
- Gold Sailor Style Bows
- Gold Headband
- Black Headband
- Neutral Scalloped Bow
- Big Gold Bow
- Black Scalloped Bow
- Pencil Bow Set
- Hair Ties – the absolute best!!
- Wax Stick
Extras That Make School Mornings Easier
These aren’t technically uniform pieces, but they’ve made getting ready so much smoother.
- Waterproof backpack
- Leak-proof water bottle
- Bentgo lunch box
- Name labels for clothing and supplies
- Stain remover stick
- Lightweight sweater or jacket
- Extra hair ties in the backpack
Shop These Favorites:
- Backpack – pricier but so durable and worth it! Also noting, you can toss it in the washer when it starts looking dirty!!
- Water Bottle – our school requires clear bottles & this one was perfect. Easy to clean and never had a problem with leaks.
- Lunch Box – super durable and I like that it matches the backpack.
- Bento Box – lots of colors to choose from, good size & helps keep foods separate for lunch!
- Name Labels – perfect for supplies!
- Clothing labels – have you ever seen your school lost & found? Need I say more??
My Biggest Tip
When you find a uniform item your child loves, buy multiples before they’re discontinued or sell out. There’s nothing better than grabbing the same pair of shorts or the same socks every morning without wondering if they’ll fit differently.
School mornings are busy enough—keeping things simple has been one of the best decisions for our family.
I hope this roundup helps make your back-to-school shopping just a little easier. If you have a favorite uniform item that your family swears by, I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
